Your Thyroid and Its Purpose

Thyroid ProblemThe thyroid gland is located in the front of your neck and the hormones it produces affect the function of your entire body. These hormones affect your metabolism and how you use the food you take in. What happens when you don’t create enough or create too much thyroid hormone?

When There’s Too Much

Hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid glands create too much hormone, Revere Health explains. This may cause you to be irritable and have trouble focusing. You might also lose weight without much effort. It may sound like a dieter’s dream but this condition has too many complications to be worth it.

Hyperthyroidism can occur when you get goiters. A goiter has nodules that can produce excess hormones. Most times these growths are non-cancerous, though they can be. Treating this condition will require drugs, radioactive iodine treatment or, in the worst cases, surgical removal.

And Then There’s Too Little

Hypothyroidism exhibits the opposite effects of hyperthyroidism. You can gain weight even if your exercise level or diet didn’t change. You may constantly feel tired and feel cold even if others around you aren’t. Hair loss and dry skin may also be symptoms of this condition. In children, this can inhibit proper physical and mental growth. This is why newborns are usually screened for hypothyroidism and treated immediately if they test positive for it.

Removing the thyroid glands may also cause hypothyroidism. Exposure to too much iodine can also lead to hypothyroidism. You can get an overexposure from cold medications as well the heart medication amiodarone. Previous thyroid problems can make you more prone to complications, too. However, most cases require simple treatments. Usually, a prescription for thyroid hormone pills is enough to address the issue.

The Need for Consultation

It is best to consult with a doctor regarding the treatment and management of thyroid issues. Finding a clinic near your home is best. If you live in Provo, you don’t want to go all the way to Saratoga Springs for your consultation.
