The most economical way to give your home a facelift is to give it a lick of paint. It can do much to improve the way it looks from the outside as well as the inside. To engage in a little home improvement, you should have an idea of how much home painting services will cost you.
Here is how to estimate the costs of painting a room (and, by extension, hiring the services of home painters).
Know the Size of the Paintable Area
The first thing you have to estimate is how much paint you will need to paint a room. For that, you will have to calculate the paintable area. The standard method for this is to first add the length of the wall from floor to ceiling and multiply it by the width of the room from wall to wall. This is the room square footage.
Next, do the same thing to calculate the area of the doors, windows, trim, and baseboards and subtract it from the room square footage. This is the room’s paintable area.
Find Out the Amount of Paint Needed
A gallon of paint typically covers approximately 400 square feet if there is no texture. A textured wall will need more paint, probably covering between 300 and 350 square feet. This is for a single coat.
At least two coats of paint are advisable for a better look and longer life. You will also have to add in the costs of primer. For budgetary concerns, choose a smooth wall, as painters typically charge per gallon of paint plus their hourly rate.
More experienced painters can cover 120 square feet of walls in an hour, although wood or plaster may slow them up a bit. The first coat has to dry so this affects labor costs as well. The drying time can be anywhere from one hour to 48 hours, depending on the paint.
On average, the costs of painting an interior room will range from $380 to $790. This does not include painting the trims and ceilings. Get an estimate from a professional company for home painting services and see how it compares to your own calculations.
